Nancy Pelosi, and other Democrats, have often said that unemployment compensation is a better "stimulus" to the economy than tax cuts, or almost any other program. Now Pelosi has said that food stamps are another great "stimulus" for the economy. This is in response to the Newt Gingrich assertion that Democrats have become the party of food stamps, rather than paychecks. This is based on recent figures that show more Americans are now receiving food stamps (a record) than are receiving paychecks.
Tonight's news from Gallup is that the unemployment rate has risen to 10.1%--up from a figure at the end of August of 9.3%. Now the government figures will come out tomorrow, but any "good news" is unlikely, and will simply be unbelievable. The dirty little secret is that the government unemployment figure is nothing but a POLL, just like the Gallup number. especially at this time, I would probably trust Gallup more (if the government figure was suspiciously good). This is especially true because private payroll processor ADP has reported a LOSS of 39,000 private sector jobs for September. It all adds up to either a bad report tomorrow, or a suspicious report tomorrow. Yes, the government will also report tomorrow the number of jobs ""created" or"lost" in September, but the ADP and Gallup numbers indicate that any "good" number will be suspicious. Even though the media treats the numbers as "concrete", the numbers are actually SUBJECTIVE ("seasonally adjusted"). The point is that the situation does not look good.
Not to worry. Nancy Pelosi obviously has a plan to "stimulate" the economy: INCREASE the number of people receiving food stamps and unemployment benefits! Why didn't I think of this idea? Well, it may be because I thought unemployment benefits and food stamps were humanitarian measures to transition people to a REAL JOB, and not devices to "stimulate" the economy. Silly me. I would have thought the more people unemployed, and on food stamps, the WORSE off the economy is. Obviously, I am just not in tune with modern Democratic Party thinking.
Notice the typical Pelosi genius to this plan. What do Democrats have to do to implement this plan? Right. All they have to do is MORE of what they are already doing. They are already increasing the number of people on food stamps, and keeping unemployment high. What genius!!!! Nancy Pelosi is telling us that we can expect MORE OF THE SAME.
I, for one, believe her. I now. You say it will be harder to convince everyone that more people on food stamps and more people on unemployment is a GOOD thing. But that just shows you how far behind modern Democratic Party thought you are.
